First Aid Basics Every Parent Should Know

The playground is a place of adventure and learning but with every energetic run or daring climb comes the occasional fall. While seeing your child hurt can trigger panic, most everyday injuries are minor and can be handled confidently with basic first aid knowledge. Knowing what to do in the first few moments can make all the difference.

Cuts and scrapes are among the most common childhood injuries. The main goal is to prevent infection. Gently rinse the wound under clean, running water to remove dirt. Avoid using alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, as these can slow healing. Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment and cover with a clean bandage. Keeping the wound slightly moist helps it heal faster and reduces scarring.

Nosebleeds may look alarming but are usually harmless. Sit your child upright and lean them slightly forward. Pinch the soft part of the nose just below the bridge for 5–10 minutes without checking too soon. Tilting the head backward should be avoided, as it can cause blood to be swallowed.

For head bumps, swelling often appears quickly because the scalp has many blood vessels. Apply a cold compress wrapped in cloth for about 15 minutes to reduce swelling. Continue to observe your child and seek medical care if symptoms such as vomiting, confusion, or excessive sleepiness occur.

Parents should also be familiar with basic responses to choking, minor burns, and fever. Cooling burns with running water, managing fever with fluids and appropriate medication, and knowing when to seek help are essential skills.

Most importantly, stay calm. A composed parent helps a child feel safe, turning a frightening moment into one of reassurance and healing.
